And now he’s coming to Cayman.
DJ Jazzy Jeff with the Fresh Prince aka Will Smith is responsible for Summertime, the heat-soaked groove that is, incredibly, now 21 years old. Grammy winner Jeff’s appearance at Margaritaville on Saturday, 21 July is in aid of George Town Primary School’s Music Programme as well as a 20th birthday celebration for radio station Z99, says organiser DJXS.
“I have benefitted a lot from music in Cayman and was in an orchestra when I was a kid. I knew they needed help looking for instruments. There is a growing change in Cayman where parents are supportive of music.
“As my background is orchestra and subsequently as a radio DJ, plus the school has a lot of talented kids in the band – it made total sense to try and help them,” he said.
So the idea came to the DJ to reach a new group of people to help.
“You don’t have to make a great deal of money to make a difference, or make millions to have money to donate. I figured that trying to generate interest with a younger breed would help.
“So I had the idea of bringing Jazzy Jeff down, plus the Z99 birthday and the charity would be exciting all together. Combining the three things could make it work. And Jeff relates to it as a Grammy winner, as a DJ and musician and he can relate to kids because of his production and of course the Fresh Prince and travelling the world as a DJ,” XS tells us.
DJXS says he appreciates the opportunities he has had in radio and believes that anyone can strive to do the same. Events like this can both spread the word about charity and show youngsters that a career in music can be rewarding.
Tickets for the Miller Lite-presented event are $20 advance for general admission and $50 for premium side stage, which includes a bottle of bubbly for every ticket holder and a special VIP-only bar. Tickets are also available at the door but will cost more. In advance, tickets can be purchased from Margaritaville.
The night starts at 7pm with support acts and Jazzy Jeff is promising a set that will last for several hours until midnight.
