After a brief hiatus, mixed league netball is making a comeback.
The Cayman Islands Netball Association will be staging its Mixed League starting in September. Sponsored by Camana Bay, matches will take place indoors at the Arts and Recreation Centre.
Technical director for Cayman netball Gillian Lee spoke about the upcoming competition.
“The Camana Bay Summer Mixed League will run during September and October,” Lee said. “It will be even more exciting with Thursday nights being conducted inside at Camana Bay.
“Get your teams together, whether you’ve played netball before or not it doesn’t matter. Get your friends and/or work mates together and create your team.”
The mixed league was last held in the summer of 2010. The Frank Hall Homes Blazers emerged champions for the first time behind a collection of netball stars such as Stacy Reid-Satahoo, Molly-Ann Moore and Cynthia Collington. There was also an impressive array of male talent featuring basketball star Gary ‘Butcher’ McLaughlin, flag football champion Richard Allen and veteran mixed league participant Gavin Watts.
Interestingly, many of the ladies on that squad formed the 2012 All Stars A squad, which claimed Cayman’s national netball championship. All Stars would defeat their rivals, two-time winners Roma A, at Camana Bay back in May. It marked the first time a national finals was held indoors.
News of the mixed league comes after the Stella Maris fundraiser at the Harquail Theatre this month. The dance group, from Jamaica, performed here for the second straight year and helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence.
