Leaders off island for week

An unusual situation arose last week as the Cayman Islands premier, deputy premier and governor were all off the Islands for the majority of the time.

There was significant speculation as to the whereabouts of Premier McKeeva Bush. However, his press secretary, Charles Glidden, confirmed Mr. Bush was merely taking “personal leave” in the United States ahead of a Florida Caribbean Cruise Association meeting to be held in the beginning of the week.

According to Government Information Services, Mr. Bush was scheduled to appear at a National Heroes Day committee media conference this morning. However, Mr. Glidden said he was unaware of any schedule change to the cruise association meeting.

Deputy Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly was in Sri Lanka for a CPA conference, according to her staff. She was due to return to the Islands on 15 September.

Governor Duncan Taylor took a month’s vacation between 10 August and Sunday, 9 September, according to his staff; missing the annual Throne Speech as part of government’s belated debate on the 2012/13 budget.

In the absence of the Islands’ three most powerful leaders, Health Minister Mark Scotland stepped in to act in the role of premier, according to Mr. Glidden.

At one point or another, all of the government’s ministers have stepped in for Mr. Bush or Ms O’Connor-Connolly as necessity dictates, Mr. Glidden said.

Standing in for Governor Taylor during his time off was Deputy Governor Franz Manderson.

  1. Er..the Throne Speech..was it delivered? or did I miss it in the morass of important Government press statements and politicians’ yakkety around the due time?
I assume that the nonsense surrounding the Government’s inability to produce a Budget and the resultant delay, is the reason for the Governor being absent when the Throne Speech was (if it was) to be delivered?
I propose we should put a bath in front of each of our Hon Members of the Assembly and ask them to run it. Or maybe that’s too difficult?
