We like fun in Weekender. In fact, it’s our third or fourth favourite thing to do after frowning, eating pie and thinking about whether the concept of the soul is a necessarily central element of existential consciousness or a purely philosophical conceit.
Given that it’s supposedly low season, there ain’t half a few things to do on this rock at the moment, which is as pleasing as finding a previously-thought-lost set of notes by Martin Heidegger in the KFC bins.
The Kyper Funk Roller Disco is a groovy sounding evening at Kings Sports Centre on Saturday, 15 September from 8pm. There’s loads of prizes up for grabs for such things as best solo, best group and stuff – about $1,200 worth, in fact. So come in costume. DJs are XS and Jonesian, tickets are $25 and include skate rental. There’s also a raffle for a VIP party at Obar on offer.
At Elements, meanwhile, from 9pm on Saturday there’s Fly Society Saturday – a new hip hop, RnB and Dancehall party in the company of Special Opz, DJ Royal and DJ X-Rey. That one’s $5 for women, $10 for men and $25 for VIP. Jet is offering Ladies Nights with all you can drink from 8.30 to 10pm – costing $15 for that privilege. The night runs until just before midnight clonks its way onto our clock-wedges with the persistent inevitability of a Wittgensteinian linguistic logic trap.
Keeping the party going on Tuesday, 18 September – and why not, indeed – there’s a Basement Party at Royal Palms, which since the introduction of its ace pool has become even better. It’s deep house, tribal house, funky house, groovy house, classic house and readings from Friedrich Nietzche’s Ecce Homo. Maybe not that last one.
DJs for the bash, which is free and runs from 9pm to 1am, include Skrelick, Mixmaster and Glenroy.
“Come and enjoy the sexiest people on island with a groovy flavour,” says representative Socrates of Athens (470BCE-399BCE). The enigmatic father of modern thought also advises, through the work of his students Plato and Xenophon, that people should bring a swimsuit to take advantage of the pool bar. As ever, he speaks a lot of sense and has a cracking beard, too.
