Racers chase Lake Havasu

A jet ski competition in Cayman is coming to an end.

The Cayman Islands Watercraft Association is staging the final round of its 2012 national circuit championship this Sunday, 16 September, at the Grand Caymanian resort from about 10.30am to 4.30pm.

As association secretary April Panton states, the race leads into the world finals.

“The champions of this season will be eligible to go away and participate in the World Finals at Lake Havasu at the end of September/early October,” Panton said.

Riders will be looking emulate the performance of Jordan ‘JJ’ McLean, who claimed the pro class championship at the 2011 International Jet Sports Boating Association World Finals. McLean competed in Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Sunday’s race is expected to take place directly behind the resort, around the North Sound of Grand Cayman. Spectators can watch the action from the resort’s beach for free. Racers are slated to reach speeds of 80 miles per hour. Aside from the racing, there are slated to be other festivities including a beach volleyball tournament with food on sale.

The local season, consisting of four races, started back in April and has used several locales including South Sound and Kaibo. Under a new class structure by association president and former racer George ‘Lulu’ Smith, a number of racers have excelled. Among them is Courtney Wisdom, Luke Welds and Gary ‘GJ’ Whittaker, who claimed the 2012 Jet Around Cayman title this summer.

Interestingly, this weekend’s finale had been delayed for a number of weeks due to inclement weather. Grand Caymanian director of sales and marketing Brooke Meyer previously stated that the resort was enthusiastic to serve as host.

“We are privileged to become the title sponsor of this great event and look forward to providing an exciting day of family fun for race fans and spectators at the resort,” Meyer said.
