In the Digicel Summer League, put on by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association, the Club House Bulldogs have quietly put together a remarkable season.
Club House notched their 8th win this past weekend in a 6-0 shutout over rival the dms West Bay Hellcats. Whether the quarterback reigns fall to Dave “Spanish” Velez, Chris Spigner or Luigi Moxam, the Bulldogs have found ways to win. Moxam got the nod last Saturday and had a relatively modest performance with one touchdown and one interception.
Moxam did, however, make the game-breaking play when he hooked up with Velez for a 40-yard TD late in the first half. That would prove to be enough behind the Bulldog defence featuring Todd Hazlewood, Chip Whitney, Kevin Zimmer and Dillon Claassens. The Hellcats, with stars Jacob “Frecko” Ebanks, Phil Brown, Damian Barboram and Perry ‘BoyWonder’ Levy, struggled on offence.
The other matches at Ed Bush field in West Bay would see the Maples Packers knock off the Cayman Power Sports and Marine Hurricanes 21-14 and the Burger King Panthers clinch a playoff berth when they cruised by the PWC Renegades 34-6. Barrett Edri, Lesley Harvey, Rupert Whittaker and Davanni James played well for Maples. Taj Haye had a career-high six receptions and three TDs for Burger King. Quarterback Chris Lucas led the offence by completing 19 of 22 passes for four TDs with one rushing TD.
Having now clinched a playoff spot, the Packers look to improve their seeding with a win over the Bulldogs this Saturday, 15 September, at 4pm in the featured match-up of the week. The Hurricanes look to wrap up their season on a positive note against the lowly PWC Renegades at 1.30pm and the Panthers tackle the Cox Colts at 2.45pm.
