Local supermarkets in the Cayman Islands have cleared their shelves of flavoured butters, tahini and peanut products from Sunland Inc. following a salmonella scare.
Sunland, Inc. announced a voluntary recall of its Almond Butter, Peanut Butter, Cashew Butter, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut products.
The manufacturer said its products made between 1 May and 24 September may be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems.
Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
The voluntary recall was initiated after learning that between 11 June and 2 September, 29 people reported contracting salmonella in 18 states in the United States, including Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland, according to a report issued on September 22, 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers, particularly the many families who enjoy our peanut butter everyday. While FDA, CDC, and state health agencies investigate to confirm the cause of illnesses reported, as a precautionary step, we have decided to voluntarily recall our Almond Peanut and Cashew Butters, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut products manufactured between 1 May, 2012 and 24 September, 2012. If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Please return the product to your supermarket for a full refund or dispose of it,” said Jimmie Shearer, President and CEO of Sunland, Inc.
The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration. No other Sunland products are affected by this recall.
The affected products that had been available in stores in Cayman include Earth Balance Almond Butter with “best by” dates between May 2013 and September 2013 and the UPC number of 3377610090 and Sunland Raspberry Peanut Butter Spread with UPC number of 0-48687-61906-1 and Naturally More Almond Butter with a UPC number of 0-58595-00019.
