Shutterbugs are intrinsically-linked to the Caribbean experience and so it’s apt that Butterfield Place will be swimming with great photos from Friday, 28 September right through until Friday, 4 January.
Curator of the Cayfest Photo Exhibition is Weekender’s good buddy Kaitlyn Elphinstone. She explains that the Butterfield Hall of Art will exhibit the winning photographs from April’s Cayfest Online Photo Exhibition.
“Photography has many uses. It can be used to document history, tell stories, create art, preserve memories, market something or someone, and more. It’s a practical art form and one, thanks to modern technology, that is widely accessible,” she says.
Memories and culture
Photography, continues the artist, is especially important in a community that is in continual motion. By taking photographs, we can protect and preserve memories, build identity and strengthen community and culture.
As for the contest, that’s important also, Kaitlyn says.
“Individuals of all ages and abilities were able to be a part of the art by uploading their photographs to the Cayman National Cultural Foundation’s new website. Photographs presented here represent the top two from 12 categories and over 300 entries. Images were carefully judged by professional photographers and the general public as well.
“There is a tremendous amount of talented photographers in the Cayman Islands and we hope this exhibition will showcase their diversity as well as the power of this visual art form. We cannot thank our corporate sponsors enough for their support, which has enabled Cayman National Cultural Foundation to host such a successful event where local photographers were given the opportunity to capture the energy of our community and intricacies of our culture.”
