The Bahamas will once again host some of Cayman’s best gridiron players.
The Bahamas Flag Football League is set to stage its annual invitational tournament on 14-16 October at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex in Nassau.
League director Jayson Clarke states the Bahamians are eager to play Cayman.
“We’re expecting a really good display of competition while building stronger ties and relationships,” Clarke said. “We are proud to announce that teams representing both Cayman leagues are coming all the way to Nassau to participate.
“Since our inaugural season in 2009, the league and the sport itself have grown significantly. We’ve had three intense local seasons as well as teams travelling to the Cayman Islands to compete in their regional tourney.”
Often referred to as the Caribbean Regional Cup, the event has taken place since the Bahamian league formed in 2009. Cayman is slated to be represented by male and female squads from the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association and the Grand Cayman Flag Football Association.
A total of 13 teams are taking part with eight men’s sides and five women’s squads from Cayman, New Providence and Freeport.
Cayman will look to replicate last year’s form. Both female teams made the finals (the Grand Cayman association won) while the men’s side lost in the finals. The ladies featured star talents Bobeth O’Garro, Scimone Campbell and Sophia Dilbert while Perry Levy, Leslie Harvey and Kevin Solomon were the male stars.
News of the Bahamas trip comes as both local groups wrap up their respective competitions. The Cayman association’s Digicel Summer League held its finale last Saturday between Luigi Moxam’s Club House Bulldogs and Kevin Maxwell’s dms West Bay Hellcats.
The Grand Cayman association’s Dart Women’s League played its semi-finals over the weekend with the finals set for this Friday, 5 October, from 7pm.
