Animal lovers ‘paws’ for wine

Annual CARE event raises money for animals

It was good food, good wine and good company all for a good cause at the Cayman Animal Rescue Enthusiasts third annual ‘Paws for Wine’ event at Ristorante Pappagallo on 27 October.

Paws for Wine offered guests the chance to taste from nine different wine selections provided by BlackBeard’s and to eat a variety of foods in a cocktail party type of setting, while grooving to the music of Suite Elite.

Each guest was given four wine tasting tokens with their event tickets, which allowed them to sample good wines from four different countries: Italy, France, Canada and New Zealand.

In addition to passed canapés, Ristorante Pappagallo offered a selection of foods including three different pastas, roast beef, roast leg of lamb and ‘mash-tinis’ – garlic mashed potatoes served in a martini glass with more than a dozen different topping choices.

Funds were raised through ticket sales, a silent auction and a live auction. Items sold during the live auction – which was conducted by Radio Cayman’s Jay Ehrhart – included a number of ‘staycation’ opportunities; a pet portrait by artist Terry Gunderson; and a Christmas-themed wine lunch for eight people at a home or office, complete with a chef and sommelier.

In the end, CARE sold 142 tickets and grossed over $19,000 at the event, according to volunteer Lesley Agostinelli.

CARE’s mission is to prevent the ill-treatment, cruelty, suffering and the over-population of domestic animals. Among other things, the funds raised help pay for the spaying and neutering of dogs and cats, the transfer of homeless puppies overseas and the placement of dogs and cats in adopted homes here in Cayman.
