Brac music programme grows

The music department at Layman E. Scott High School in Cayman Brac has been growing leaps and bounds with a concert band component being added to the school’s classes.

Music teacher Kasandra Scott has dedicated herself to the improvement of the music programme at the secondary school.

“I believe that every child should be provided with the best quality education and learning opportunities,” she noted. Ms Scott said that the music department had staged walk-a-thons, concerts and food sales, in addition to private donations from Cayman National Bank and Member of the Legislative Assembly for the Sister Islands Moses KirKconnell with the purpose of purchasing US$10,300 of musical instruments and equipment for the music department.

“We are still a few instruments short, but we are now able to supply more than 50 per cent of the lower school with band instruments,” Ms Scott said. She explained that the ultimate goal of the department moving forward is the purchase of string instruments such as violins, violas, and cellos.

“It would be good to have an orchestra one day,” Ms Scott said.

The concert band is different from marching bands in that they remain seated. Ms Scott, who plays nearly every instrument said it is her hope to be able to do performances with the group and stage productions once they are fully trained.
