I say Cayman, you say talent

Tapping into the class of the creative performers of Cayman is always worth the time, which is why the upcoming Cayman’s Got Talent contest is so well thought of.

Auditions take place over the next few weeks – beginning on Saturday, 17 November at 5pm at John Gray Hall on Walkers Road, explains Nolly Brown, the brains behind the talent quest, which first wowed audiences in 2010.

“It is mainly for the youth of Cayman,” says Nolly.

“We scout the districts for talent over a four week period and select five or six from each district to be in the final. We try to get as much sponsorship as we can for the giveaways and trophies.”

Nolly says that previous talent show participants are now going great guns in Cayman following their appearances on the stage.

“For example, Lebron MacLean is one of the juniors and he has now been in commercials. He is progressing in dance, which was his category and has now encouraged the West Bay Primary School to take on after school dancing activities.

“We also have Jamesette Anglin who is going to be on The Voice TV show. She came second runner up last year. Also there was Andy Blake, who is also doing well in the music world, writing songs and has had songs on the radio.”

Come and support

So the talent is there, but sometimes, says Nolly, it can be a bit difficult in other avenues.

“You know how us Caymanians are; getting local people to help us can be a little problem but the community buying more tickets would be a big difference.

“We found kids used to compete against the adults so we split it up into Cayman’s Got Talent for those 17 and up, and for 6 to 16 we have the Young Talented Stars,” explains Nolly.

The call for talent is still out there, he continues. There are four categories – dance, vocals, drama and skits and instruments.

An application form can be downloaded from the Nolly Brown website and entrants just bring it on the day of the audition.

“It doesn’t matter what district you come from, you can come to any audition. The audition fee for a single artist is $20 and groups are $40. All this money goes to the awards which we have to order from overseas and get them shipped in.

“So bring it on. We are looking for new and interesting things every year. The sky is the limit – be original.”
