Editorial for 24 January: Cayman earning its culinary moniker

The glitz and celebrity of the 5th annual Cayman Cookout is
now over, as is the Cayman Islands Rum Festival, but there is still a full
slate of culinary events in the next two weeks.

The tasty fun starts this Saturday at Camana Bay where the
25th Taste of Cayman Food & Wine Festival takes place. There, many of
Cayman’s best restaurants and chefs will prepare samples of their food to
tickle the taste buds of visitors and residents alike.

This year, Taste of Cayman moves from the hard surfaces of
the Cayman Bay Crescent to a venue closer to its roots: Camana Bay’s
grass-surfaced Festival Green.

In addition to the great food, all of Grand Cayman’s wine,
spirits and beer distributors will be on hand, along with some of their
international producers. There will be live music, cultural exhibits and more
at this fun-filled annual event.

On the Holiday Monday, the annual Fish Tea Cook-off will
take place in East End as part of the East End Surf Challenge. Here, attendees

The following Saturday, February 2nd, Slow Food Day will
offer visitors and residents two chances to enjoy Cayman’s culinary delights.
First, that morning at the Market at the Grounds, five chefs will be pairing
with local farmers to produce a true taste of Cayman. That evening on the
Camana Bay beach, another celebrity chef will come to the Island to offer his
talents to the folks at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in cooking up a
‘farm-to-beach’ dinner using local ingredients.

Despite the Department of Tourism’s decision to abandon what
was marketed as Culinary Month and focus on Cayman being the ‘Culinary Capital
of the Caribbean’, the first part of the year on Grand Cayman continues to be
packed with food, wine and spirits goodness. The variety of events and price
points truly offers everyone a chance to enjoy the tastes of Cayman.
