Motions stir Tropicana

The Motions Unlimited senior gymnastics team of Haley Willkom, Morgan Lloyd, Sami Peene and Raegan Rutty recently travelled to Tampa, Florida to compete at the 25th annual Gasparilla Classic held at Tropicana Field.

The meet featured teams from all over the United States, as well as international teams from Canada, Jamaica, Bahamas, Colombia, Venezuela and Costa Rica.

Willkom achieved a personal best and qualifying all-around score for the upcoming NatWest Island Games in Bermuda in July. Her strong performance earns her a spot on the team that will represent the Cayman Islands during those games.

Lloyd, who earned her place on the Island Games team in Orlando weeks ago, topped her personal best all-around score and took an impressive sixth place all-around in her age group.

Peene and Rutty, both 11, also put in strong performances at the meet. With Peene posting the high score for the Motions team, this dynamic duo have their sights set high and represent a bright future for gymnastics in the Cayman Islands.

Coach Kelly Paz said: “Each season, the standard set by the girls and boys competing overseas continues to rise. The senior teams set benchmarks and the younger gymnasts, following in their footsteps, continue to set their sights higher. The programme has momentum and it’s exciting to see it develop.”
