Lighthouse School “Sports Day” was a fun and exciting time for everyone attending.
“This is the first time I attended the event and I think it is great and the teachers are great also,” said parent Ann Puthillath.
Throughout the day, parents and invited guests got the opportunity to witness students perform a parade, cheerleading stunts and races. Last Friday’s event featured a 50 metre walk and run, shuttle relay race, 50m relay, lime and spoon race, balloon race and obstacle course.
Education Minister Rolston Anglin said he was impressed with the students’ performances.
“Teachers at the Lighthouse School do a good job in making sure every child gets to participate,” Anglin said. “No one is left behind.”
Anglin went on to say it is one of the sports days he always looks forward to attending. Before the activities got on the way, Minister Anglin encouraged students to do their best and be good sportsmen because they were all winners.
Overseeing the activities will be school staff such as principal Carla MacVicar, deputy principal Olga Gourzong and physical education teacher Elroy Bryan.
Bryan said self-motivation was a big theme for students.
“We try each day to instil a sense of ‘Yes I Can’ within all of our students,” Bryan said. “Our Sports Day is a wonderful way for our students to prove this notion and show of their many talents.”
During the day, children were divided into three groups in primary, secondary, and Motor Activities Training Programme, which consists of students in wheel chairs. All of the students played an active role in the sports day, Bryan noted.
Bryan said the focus throughout the day was on participation rather than competition, which helps students to put their best foot forward. Students received benefits such as fitness and health development, mental alertness, an increase in vocabulary and language concepts, an understanding of the need to play fairly, the notion of good sportsmanship and how that develops social awareness and contributes to children’s moral development.
According to Bryan, sports day is made possible because of caring staff and the continued support of parents.
“We thanks Caribbean Utilities Company for supporting the event every year financially and their staff for coming out to cheer and work along with the students. We are also blessed to have Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King’s support with meals for students.”
