Sluggers warm up

Fast-pitch softball is about to get under way.

The Cayman Islands Softball Association will be staging a short opening ceremony for its 2013 league this Saturday, 16 March, at 5.30pm at the Field of Dreams facility.

Afterward, there will be a male all-star game, followed by an all-star female game. The men will begin their official games on Sunday, 17 March, and the women on Saturday, 23 March. Like last year, matches are slated to take place in West Bay, next to the Jimmy Powell cricket oval.

Heading into 2013, focus will be on the West Indie Marine Patriots. Fresh off their 2012 triumph, the Patriots are Cayman’s two-time reigning champions. The Patriots dominated last year’s competition with 19 wins, five losses and zero ties behind home run threats Bradimir Robinson (eight home runs), Johnny Johnson Sr. (six) and Peter Whittaker (five).

Aside from the Patriots, the other men’s teams includes Donald Watler’s Latinos and Jose’s Escape Pirates. The women’s division includes the CNB/APS Security Team Extreme and talents such as Breana Welds, Eleanor Berry and Jahzenia Thomas.
