The Five-A-Side League at King’s Sports Centre has been made tremendous changes to revamp its programme.
The change began last year, as King’s brought in a new sports programme director, as well as a new assistant sports programme director. With any new person coming into a position, it takes time to learn the programme, players and logistics. However, collectively they have done their best to keep the league running as smoothly and as consistently as in previous years.
All teams are given two months notice of the start of the league. They receive a letter stating what is expected of them, what King’s will provide and how the league operates.
“There is also a mandatory captains’ meeting,” said Alyssa Christian, King’s marketing manager. “Not everything is perfect and not everyone is perfect.
“When changes or miscommunications occur, we make sure that we correct the mistake as quickly as we can so that we can continue the season smoothly. King’s also makes sure to send out weekly to bi-weekly updates to all of the teams as far as scores and standings go.
“Players do play for prizes, as they have always done in the past. The first place winners of each division receive a $500 bar tab at the bar of their choice.
“The second place winners receive a trophy. First, second and third place winners also receive coverage in the Caymanian Compass.
“We are also working on introducing The Golden Boot, a prize for the top scorer in each division, as well as The Golden Glove, a prize for the top goalie in each division.
“If there was anything that should have been fulfilled from when the previous sports director was here, we would have had no way of knowing unless it was brought to our attention from the specific team and we would have been happy to fulfil it, as we have had to do with one team.
“As for equipment, new balls have been ordered and are now here. The order was placed in time for the start of the league, however due to an issue with shipping, there was a delay. There is a lot of wear and tear to the court at King’s due to the fact that it is used for so many activities.
“It is a work in progress and will always be an ongoing project, however, the efforts are being made.
“The referees were given a slightly lesser pay, but were compensated with all receiving a one-year gym membership.”
Christian added: “As the marketing manager, I take great pride in how King’s is perceived from our customers, potential customers and general public. I make efforts every day, along with the rest of the staff and management to improve King’s and all of our programmes.”
