Local basketball fans should be spoiled for choice.
The Cayman Islands Basketball Association has its National Women’s League and Men’s League – now split into division one and two – ongoing at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre.
The men are next in action this Sunday, 24 March. Titans and team Charterland square off at 4pm in a division two clash. At 5pm, the Dominos Warriors battle George Town Sports Club with the Esso Blazers facing the Silver Bullets at 6.45pm.
Bruce Thompson should be the player to watch for Titans. In the season opening 84-75 win over team Philippines, Thompson notched 30 points with eight rebounds to lead all scorers.
Dominos are coming off a 98-88 loss in the season opener to reigning champs Esso. Jerome Narcisse led all scorers with 25 points – including three treys – and four rebounds.
George Town were crushed in their opener, 90-46, by the Silver Bullets. Shane Chambers was the top scorer with 16 points off five long bombs.
In their victory, the Blazers had five players in double figures lead by Kevin Maxwell’s 18 points and nine rebounds. Curtis Wilson powered the Silver Bullets with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
The 3-0 Wolves continue to dominate the women’s league. Heading into this week, their most recent result was a 60-40 thumping of 1-2 Island Heritage Silver Mist last Thursday.
Newcomer Carmen Picate led all scorers with 26 points, six steals and Sarah Kidd chipped in 13 points and six rebounds. Scimone Campbell paced Island Heritage with 12 points and six steals, while Tashena Parks added 11 points and 13 boards.
Reigning champions Home Gas Flames, 1-2, got their first win of the season last Thursday, beating 1-2 Welly’s Cool Spot, 58-55. Sade Wood exploded for Home Gas with 27 points off four treys and six rebounds. Rochel Gardener led Welly’s with 19 points and five steals.
