Arin leads Filipino squad

Men’s basketball is up and running in Cayman.

Division two of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2013 National Men’s League is already into round three. Matches are slated for Wednesday, 27 March, at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre.

At 7.10pm Charterland face Game Takers while Philippines tackle New Jerusalem at 8.45pm. Charterland, the reigning division champs, made its season debut on Sunday and features the same roster of players from 2012, including ageless wonder Ovaine Monteith, speedster Scott Murray and double-double machine Nathan Smith.

Game Takers are a new club with veteran talent such as national men’s coach Daniel Augustine. The squad won its season opener over the Esso Blazers, 69-47. Darryl Paddyfoot was the top scorer with 18 points, nine rebounds while women’s coach Bruce Reynolds notched 16 points, 10 boards and Cleveland Stewart Snr added 10 points, 11 boards.

Philippines are 1-1 after beating Esso last Wednesday. Paul Villanueva looks to be the biggest threat after notching 23 points off a trio of three-pointers in the season opener. The team features three Caymanian basketball prodigies in Arin Taylor (12 points off two treys in the opener), Jonathan Powery and Juawon Ebanks (eight points off two long bombs).

New Jerusalem is another rookie side with many newcomers. The most familiar faces are runner Kevin Connolly and 2013 Young Caymanian Leadership Award finalist Michael Blackburn.
