Roje shines with Starlet power

Roje Williams is reliving some of his former glory in a Toyota Starlet.

The motorsports veteran was among the top finishers in last Sunday’s autocross race. Williams, 27, would win the Unlimited Division in 63.108 seconds, the fastest mark during the group stages, before finishing second in the Unlimited Battle segment behind the wheel of the Flower Power Toyota Starlet EP82.

Williams, who usually competes these days in a Nissan Silvia, states that success was by chance.

“I competed from 2008 to 2010 in a Starlet and then I took a break,” Williams said. “The Al and Jay Memorial last year was my first time back and I returned in a Silvia.

“For this race, I got the opportunity to drive a Starlet and I took a shot. I’d drive a Starlet again, but it will depend if I get the opportunity. I’d drive that same Starlet again but it’s not my car, it belongs to Bobby Hulse’s wife, Vicki.

“Starlets will always be my first love. The Silvia is Rear Wheel Drive but I can handle it and it can drift comfortably.”

Williams and his Starlet, which is Front Wheel Drive, would beat out a field of seven other drivers in the Cayman Motorsports Association’s third meet of the 2013 Time Attack season. Bobby Hulse, the association president, was second in the Unlimited group at 64.093 seconds in his Toyota Altezza SXE10.

Michael Weatherford ran his yellow Subaru Impreza GC8 to third place at the Progressive Loop, in 64.549 seconds. Marcus Huggins rebounded from a fifth place time of 66.023 seconds to take the Unlimited Battle crown in the Kimmar Distributors Toyota Starlet.

Craig Burke maintained his billing as a top driver in the Street Class with his white Subaru Impreza GC8. Burke was second in the group at 66.454 seconds, behind Reynaldo Powery’s Nissan Primera P11 and its time of 65.337 seconds, before besting Powery in the Battle run. Nikko Miller placed third in 69.972 seconds, driving a Mitsubishi Mirage.

Ajoni Ambersley, who won the Street Battle section in March, moved up to the Unlimited segment and placed fourth in the Flower Power Starlet in 65.289 seconds.

In all, 16 racers competed. Among the notable racers were Richard Crawshaw in a Porsche Carrera 4S, Drew Conolly in a Honda Civic Type R EK9 and relative newcomer Angel Dixon in the Automotive Art/Paul Bodden Heavy Equipment Mitsubishi Mirage.

The 2013 Time Attack season sees its next race slated for 26 May.
