Velasco is sure Titans will tower

Fernando Velasco must be one of the happiest players in the National Football League right now.

The Tennessee Titans centre recently signed a new deal with the team he joined six years ago and last week, while on a short vacation to the Cayman Islands, he proposed to his girlfriend of four years after swimming with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove.

The lucky lady who received a diamond ring was Tieashia Odom, who was thrilled with her new bling and the notion of becoming Mrs. Velasco.

The whole thing was orchestrated by local businessman Matthew Leslie and Velasco was appreciative of his help.

“Me and my girlfriend were planning a trip and we just picked the Caymans. She had no idea that I was going to propose to her while we’re here, so it was an awesome deal organised by Matthew,” Velasco said.

Before returning home to Nashville and resuming preseason training, Velasco contemplated how the Titans will do next season.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t make the playoffs last year, but we’re working really hard in the off season and that is our No. 1 goal, to reach the playoffs this time,” he said.

“Last year, we only won six games and that was a disappointment,” he added. “I felt like coach (Mike) Munchak definitely moved the team in the right direction.

“On the personal side, I probably had my best year. I started all 16 games, so that was a blessing. Everything was really coming around with my whole NFL career.”

Velasco, 28, feels settled with the Titans now since being drafted there six years ago.

“I see my future going well,” he said. “I love Tennessee, it’s close to home. I come from Georgia and it’s not a bad drive.

“Coach Munchak, he’s been my offensive line coach my first two years, then became the head coach, now he’s back as the offensive line coach, double doing it as the head coach.

“I really like that aspect of Tennessee,” he said. “My teammates are good guys. It’s a good place to be. My family love coming up and visiting and I love the city of Nashville and its country music. It’s a good deal and I really enjoy it.”
