Police: Gunshot not cause of man’s injuries

A man remained hospitalised Sunday morning, but police said the injuries he suffered the previous evening were not inflicted by a gunshot as the victim had previously told authorities.

According to the Royal Cayman Island Police Service, a man reported that as he was walking along Kings Road about 10pm Saturday in West Bay, he was shot in the back of the leg.

He was transported to Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town.

Police initially issued a news release stating that they were investigating the incident as a shooting. But early Sunday morning, Detective Chief Inspector Richard Barrow said, “Further to the earlier release, upon investigation and subsequent medical examination at the Cayman Islands Hospital it was concluded that the injury sustained was not as a result of a gun shot as reported by the male victim.

“The male victim remains in hospital,” Mr. Barrow said. “Police investigations are continuing in this matter.”

Anyone who was in the area at the time who can provide information to assist the investigation is asked contact the West Bay police station at 949-3999.
