Fittest profit from Credit Union

Weekend warriors get another chance to raise their fitness levels in the Credit Union second annual 5K run/walk this weekend.

It starts and ends from the Credit Union building at 58 Huldah Avenue in George Town (opposite Smith Road Oval cricket pitch) on Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

Forms can be collected from the Credit Union, Department of Sports, Sport N Zone, No. 1 Shoe Shop and Winners Circle.

Registration and race pack collection is on all week until Friday at the Credit Union office from 3 to 6 p.m. Late registration can be done on the day from 5:30 to 6:15 a.m.

There is a stroller category as well as all the usual divisions, spot prizes, plus prizes for the fastest female and male civil servant and fastest female and male Credit Union employee.

Entry is $15 for adults and $5 for children and all proceeds go to charity.

Last year’s fastest finishers were Leslie-Ann Daley and Dominic Corbin in the female and male categories.

Wendy Fisher and Dalton Watler were the fastest female and male civil servants and the fastest Credit Union female and male were Corinne Glasgow and Darley Powery.

Corbin will be off island. New champ could be Evans Simiyu, one of the swiftest civil servants.

Merta Day is the sports coordinator for women in the Department of Sports. She said: “The primary objective of the Department of Sports is to support community events in physical exercise activities.

“These types of events encourage the entire community to be more active and to lead a less sedentary lifestyle. We feel they also cater to all levels of fitness allowing a wider cross section to participate.”

Day is pleased that this year a prize for a stroller division has been included, which makes it more family-friendly.

She added: “Also, the cost for registration is significantly lower with children at only $5, and groups of adults registering five or more paying only $10.

“We hope to see an increase in participation this year and emphasize that the start time is half an hour earlier at 6:30 a.m.”
