It is a new year, but Asian Retail remain the team to beat in Filipino basketball.
The traditional frontrunners sit 5-0 atop the Phil-Cay Basketball Tournament, also called the Cayman Islands Basketball Association Division Three League. The squad features a pair of established hoopsters in Christian Ferrer and Chris Lucas.
Smoothie King are second at 4-2, followed by Caixchel and Big Brother/Tony’s Toys who have identical 3-2 records. Carlos and Martin’s/Lone Star and Guardians have 2-2 marks with 2-4 Hamlyn Electronics, 1-5 Miracle Brokers International and 0-3 Ambassadors rounding out the standings.
Indeed, a number of star basketball talents are in the league (which is sponsored by Saxon MG and Wet Worx). Rotando Thompson suits up for Carlos and Martin’s, Collin Anglin and Dwight O’Garro headline Tony’s Toys Big Brother and Hamyln feature Kevin Maxwell and Vanrick Felix.
The league, which runs until Dec. 1, is a social competition featuring many participants from the Philippines. It generally serves as part of the offseason training for regulars in the national men’s league.
League organizers say the regular season will end in about two weeks with the top eight teams advancing to the playoffs. Matches are scheduled for every Friday, Sunday and Wednesday from 6:30pm at association basketball court off Eastern Avenue in George Town.
