Police have identified the 20-year-old man who died Sunday after getting into difficulty off Seven Mile Beach as Damian Rose of West Bay.
Mr. Rose died Sunday morning after police said he got into trouble while in the sea with two relatives shortly before 7 a.m. They had been in the water at Public Beach on West Bay Road.
Police and paramedics who attended the scene gave CPR to the victim at the beach. He was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:02 a.m.
RCIPS is investigating the incident surrounding the young man’s death.
This latest fatality is the at least the eleventh water-related death in the sea off the Cayman Islands this year.
It is the first reported death in local waters since July 12, when American tourist James Klein, age 73, died while diving in Little Cayman. That fatality came just five days after another elderly man, 80-year-old William Lemuel Lawson Jr. of Florida, died during a dive off Cayman Brac.
On average, Cayman experiences between eight and 10 water-related fatalities a year, according to statistics examined by the Caymanian Compass. Between 2008 and 2011, annual water-related fatalities averaged between nine and 10.
