Two men arrested last week in connection with the killing of Earl Hart in Prospect have been released by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
Police service officials said a 31-year-old was released outright, without bail conditions, in connection with the police inquiry. The second man, 21, was also released, but will be required to return under police bail conditions.
The 21-year-old was arrested in Savannah and the 31-year-old was arrested in Bodden Town, both in the predawn hours last Wednesday. Neither has been charged in connection with the case.
According to police, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, multiple shots were fired into an apartment on Marina Drive where Mr. Hart stayed.
Mr. Hart was taken to Cayman Islands Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead early Friday morning, Oct. 4.
According to court records, Earl Hart had testified in the murder trial of Chakane “C.J.” Scott after Scott was accused in the shooting death of Asher McGaw in East End in September 2011. Scott was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2012.
RCIPS officers investigating Mr. Hart’s killing did not state any potential motive, but indicated his court testimony had nothing to do with it.
