Fifteen spellers compete for top spot

Fifteen spellers will compete for top spot in Cayman 2013 National Spelling Bee finals on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The event takes place at the John Gray High School Hall, starting at 6 p.m.

Students competing in the finals represent nine schools: George Town Primary School, First Baptist Christian School, Prospect Primary School, St. Ignatius Catholic School, Cayman Academy, Bodden Town Primary school, Savannah Primary School, Truth For Youth School, and Creek and Spot Bay Primary School.

Students will be given words that they must spell verbally within 30 seconds. One point will be awarded to the speller for every word spelled correctly. At the end of the competition, the scores will be totaled, determining the first, second, and third place winners.

Sponsoring the event for the 16th consecutive year is the Royal Bank of Cayman. “Royal Bank is thrilled to again support this event, which showcases the best and brightest of our Cayman youth,” said Mitzie Bailey, branch manager, Red Bay.
