Legends helped kids look for goals

Two legendary former footballers were in the Cayman Islands recently to give a clinic to local kids.

Daniele Massano and Ray Clemence kept the young players enthralled at the Cayman International School field in Camana Bay in an event organized by local golfer Marcello Santi.

Italian international Massaro, 52, won 15 caps and boasts a World Cup winner’s medal from 1982.

He played for AC Milan for eight seasons in the 1980’s and 1990’s, winning four league titles, two Champions League titles and several cups.

Clemence, 65, is one of England’s most decorated goalkeepers, winning 61 caps. He played for Liverpool and Tottenham in the 1970’s and 1980’s, winning five league titles with the Reds and many cup honors with both clubs. He is currently the head of the English FA’s development team, overseeing the development of England’s youth teams.

Around 100 keen hand-picked footballers aged between 9 and 11 received some invaluable tips from the pair. Coaches from the Primary Football League league chose 10 athletes each to partake in the camp.

After watching a video of their highlights and asking some probing questions in a Q and A session, the players hit the pitch with a new ball each, donated by Chelsea Football Club. They learned some new skills, techniques and, above all, team play and sportsmanship.

Organizers described the camp as a huge success, thanks to Cayman International School’s teachers, parents, local sponsors, Massano and Clemence, and camp director Santi.

MC James Bebarfald said, “Massano And Clemence still have a passion for the game and enjoy passing on things to today’s youth.

“The camp allowed kids to get a better understanding of how this sport can be beneficial in life’s journey. They learnt tactical skills, understanding attacking protocol, defense sensory elements and how to anticipate up to three or four play options ahead.

“Both have a dear love of the Cayman islands and are hopeful of returning as they are also fond of golf The buzz they brought to the pitch was electric.”
