A police officer arrested for blackmail last week was found dead on Sunday in a secluded spot in the East End.
The body of the 45-year-old George Town officer was discovered on land off Colliers Wilderness Drive on Sunday afternoon. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
A spokeswoman confirmed the victim was the same man arrested and suspended from duty on Thursday amid a probe into allegations of blackmail.
She said, “The officer was a police constable stationed at George Town police station. He was suspended from duty at the time of his death and was on police bail following his arrest on suspicion of blackmail and breach of trust, in contravention of the Penal Code and Anti-Corruption Law, respectively.”
Family members have been informed and a liaison officer has been appointed. A report of the circumstances surrounding the death will be forwarded to the coroner’s office, the spokeswoman added.
