Moncrieffe pitching sluggers to take swings at fast throws

Locals can soon take aim for the fences.

The Cayman Islands Softball Association is looking to start its 2014 fast-pitch league within the next two months. The men’s division is slated to see its season opener March 15, and the women’s segment is expected to begin March 16.

Lori Moncrieffe serves as association vice president and said residents are encouraged to give the sport a try.

“The public can look forward to another existing year of fast pitch softball from both the men’s and women’s league,” Moncrieffe said. “Softball is a great sport that tests not only your physical ability, but also your mental ability. The sport teaches you teamwork as every position and every player plays an integral part on whether their team wins or loses.

“It is a very good way to relieve stress because it requires you to focus in the game and, of course, you get to take out aggression on the softball.”

Moncrieffe speaks from experience. Last year, she helped the Cayman Auto Diagnostic Clinic Stingers earn their second straight national title. The Stingers beat Cayman National Bank Team Xtreme in three games in the best-of-three finals at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town. Moncrieffe had help from Jessica Pawlik, Stephanie Watler and Krystal Arch, while Team Xtreme relied on Carneth Thomas, Molly-Ann Moore and Daneliz Thomas.

On the men’s side, the Redimix Patriots claimed their third straight championship. Redimix would beat the Jose’s Escape Pirates in five games in their best-of-five championship series at the West Bay softball field, next to the Jimmy Powell Cricket Oval. The Patriots relied on Bradimir Robinson, Mark Chow and Michael Carey while the Pirates leaned on Byron Bravo, Rodolfo Whitaker and Mel Omier.
