Tykes to tackle new campaign

Flag football will be catering to pigskin lovers of all ages.

The Security Center Ltd. 2014 Youth Flag Football League is slated to start Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Camana Bay Sports Field. This weekend will serve as a registration period and offer an introduction to the game. Action will be split into three age groups at various time slots.

Senior division players (kids ages 14-17) will be on the field 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The junior division (ages 7-9) plays from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m., and the middle division (ages 10-13) goes from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Once league matches begin, they will be in similar time slots for each division.

The league, which caters to boys and girls, is put on by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association, with Kyle Broadhurst serving as league coordinator. The Popeyes Saints won the senior division by defeating the 3T Cayman Giants in the finals. The Dart Cayman Islands Dolphins beat the Walkers Wolverines for the middle division crown, and the Maples Raiders topped the junior ranks by defeating the Burger King Gators.

In addition to the youth league, the association is putting on its Burger King Coed League. Tentatively slated to begin Feb. 14, there are plans to divide play into two groups with a registration fee of $500 covering 15 shirts. Last season, Burger Shack – formerly Child Please! – won their third A division title in four years at the Ed Bush Sports Center in West Bay. Wok-n-Roll topped the B ranks.
