F1 fans revving up

The Formula One season is about to recommence and Formula 1 Fans of the Cayman Islands are preparing for another series of early Sunday morning viewing and helping charities in the process.

Members have spent recent weeks coming to grips with all the rule changes which take effect this season, the biggest of which is the switch to turbo charged engines. The first race is in Melbourne, Australia on Mar. 16.

Another big change this year is a new host location. For 2014, the club will be meeting and watching the races at PD’s Grill in the Galleria Mall on West Bay Road. Lone Star has chosen to pursue the European and World Cup football fans.

The F1 club will retain the same format as last year with all but three Grand Prix being shown at 9 a.m. on race Sundays, a minimum $2 entry fee, many great door prizes, coffee and breakfast being available, spontaneous auctions and all in support of five local charities.

Organizer Danny Roach said, “We will support the same charities as last year; Cayman HospiceCare, Pines Retirement Home, Cayman Islands Cancer Society, the Humane Society and ending with the Meals on Wheels program.”

HospiceCare will receive the monies raised at the first three races, the other four charities will receive money from four consecutive races.

Roach, like many, hopes that Michael Schumacher makes a full recovery from the skiing accident he had in January. He added, “I truly hope we get good news regarding Michael Schumacher’s recovery soon.”
