Cayman may drop again

Cayman Islands have lost three of their four matches so far at the International Cricket Council World Cricket League Division Five tournament in Malaysia and face relegation.

Cayman are blaming the Malaysian heat for their bad run. The team won their first game when Kervin Ebanks impressed with a five-wicket haul to lead his side to victory over Guernsey, but have lost heavily since to Malaysia and then Nigeria and Jersey.

Cayman need to win by a big margin their final match on Wednesday against Tanzania to avoid dropping to Division Six. Bottom country Guernsey are already relegated.

Against Jersey on Sunday, Conroy Wright galvanized Cayman Islands a little as he scored 79 runs in just 51 balls but it was not enough to beat high-riding Jersey who have already qualified for the final and will be promoted as one of the top two teams.

Jersey scored 279 runs for six wickets in 50 overs. Cayman replied with 157 runs all out in 32.5 overs and lost by 122 runs.

Cayman captain Ronald Ebanks said that Jersey batted very well and deserved to win. He also added that Cayman have under-performed in the tournament.

“The heat was a factor but I wouldn’t really want to complain about the conditions and atmosphere,” Ebanks said. “As a cricketer, we’ve to be prepared for everything.”
