It’s a wrap for local filmmakers

Local film directors confirm shooting is a wrap for their short film set in the Cayman Islands: “The Devil You Know.”

“Filming was amazing. Something this big hasn’t been done in Cayman in our time here,” said 37-year-old Irish director Trevor Murphy.

“It’s a short film and hopefully the first of many. Our goal here is to set a production business in flow [locally] so that we can do these short films on a regular basis and eventually do a 90-minute feature film.”

The 30-minute film took 10 days to shoot and was written and directed by aspiring filmmakers Murphy and Badir Awe, who are moving along to the post-production stage.

“We have tons of stories and footage of the film already and we finished shooting the movie at the beginning of this month. We will spend the next three months in post-production, which is exciting in itself,” said Caymanian Awe, who is 35.

“Now the hard work begins when there’s editing, sorting out the soundtrack, getting the coloring right and all the various bits of music in the film.  Shooting is just one very small part of it,” said Murphy.

Though the film did not reflect a Caymanian story line, it had a full cast and crew of 25 people living and working in Grand Cayman.

“We filled a lot of roles, producers, production, assists, makeup and hair, casting directors, and we’ve been working with local musicians, producers,” said Awe.

The film has been a year in the making, and since the two directors met, they have secured $20,000 in sponsorship for the project.

“We’ve raised $20,000 toward the film, but we’ve only spent $17,000. We still need to raise more [funds] to finish it off properly,” Awe.

With a background in finance and theology, Awe said he is still new to the filming industry, having just started about two years ago.

“I’ve only been doing filming stuff for two years, but my experience with this is, [you don’t have to be born with] natural talent, it’s just literally hard work. Hard work can look like natural talent. That is what I have been struck with. Hard work pays off,” he said.

“The Devil You Know” tells the story of a hitman who comes to Cayman for a job but things don’t go exactly as planned. Directors said the movie should be released in June, and they are working with Camana Bay to organize a  local premiere.

The pair are also planning to submit the short film to an international film festival. So far, the Garden State Film Festival in New Jersey has shown an interest.
