The 2014 DART Alex Alexander XV-a-side championship came to a close with the Queensgate Pigs Trotters capturing it for only the second time in two decades.
The long-awaited championship came at the expense of the Advance Fire and Plumbing Buccaneers who played well but were outdone by a strong and determined Pigs side.
In the other game, the John Doak Iguanas only had to draw or win to secure their second title in a row against a Fidelity Storm side that had not had a win all season.
The Storm, however, had other ideas, and for the second year in a row played giant killers, beating the Iguanas and allowing the Queensgate Pigs to take the title. Next up is the Appleton Challenge Shield.
The national rugby sevens is taking a break as the national mens 15s gear up for their upcoming international season. Many of the players double duty for the two codes.
At least there is no fear of not having strong national sides in the future because the Greenlight RE in-school program is in full operation, currently delivering programs at Clifton Hunter, Triple C and St Ignatius.
Now in the second of the five-year schools development plan, the program will provide more than 3,000 children with in-school rugby sessions islandwide by September.
In addition, the Maples academies are now running four afternoons a week, as well as the Maples community rugby program each Saturday.
The programs have well over 350 children from the ages of 2 to 19 participating each week.
The Under-10, U-12, U-14 and U-16 are all preparing for their annual tournament in Freeport, Bahamas, from May 2 to 5, and will include a chance to watch the Cayman national senior men playing in a full international warm-up match against the Bahamas in Freeport on May 3. A total of 120 players will travel to Freeport that weekend.
