Cayman women are being urged to put on their killer heels in an effort to fight domestic violence.
“A Day In My Shoes” fundraiser hosted by the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre next week, from April 2 – 5, calls for all women who love shoes to take part and help raise funds for the women’s shelters.
Women are invited to have their photographs taken in the shoes that make them feel most empowered. The photographs do not feature models’ faces as some of them will be past clients of the Crisis Centre, who have their entry fees covered by sponsors.
Amy Martin-Friedman is a San Francisco-based photographer who initiated “A Day in My Shoes.” She is returning to Cayman in April to partner with the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre for the fundraising project.
“Every woman has a story to tell and every story is important,” she said. “They are not always about domestic violence – most of them aren’t – but this is an exercise in the power of sharing and of the empowerment of women.”
“This year’s theme is “Empowering Women” and in addition to the models, will also feature some of Cayman’s most influential women,” said event organizer Janette Goodman.
Participants can choose their photo shoot location, anywhere on the island, and will receive a mounted canvas of their photograph, as well as an invitation to the exhibit launch later this year. Their photographs and accompanying stories will appear in the coffee table book that will be sold, with all proceeds going to the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre.

I don’t see how anyone could support an organization that appears to discriminate against people based on their gender. Where is the equal support for the many men that are also victims of domestic violence? Where is the equal money for a men’s shelter?
While I applaud the work being done on behalf of women in th Cayman Islands, organizations like the Crisis Centre appear to forget the many silent victims of domestic violence…. THE MEN.
