lionfish Culls, Road, beach and reef cleanups planned for Earth Day

A lionfish cull and beach and reef cleanups are among the events planned for Earth Month.

The Cayman Islands Tourism Association is also trying to promote eco-friendly activities such as walking the Mastic Trail or taking a bioluminescence kayak tour as part of a monthlong “green challenge.”

The lionfish cull will be April 19 at DiveTech and reef cleanups, which will involve divers collecting marine trash, will depart from DiveTech, Don Fosters and Red Sail Watersports on April 27.

Beach cleanups will be going on around the island, and residents are encourage to organize their own events. Gloves and garbage bags are available from the CITA office.

CITA members DiveTech, Cayman Turtle Farm and Turtle Nest Inn have scheduled cleanups at Barkers, West Bay and Bodden Town, respectively, on April 26. The Chamber of Commerce has organized an Earth Day Roadside Cleanup the same day.

Earth Day is April 22, but events are scheduled all month.
