A suspect who robbed a woman at knifepoint late Monday was chased down by an off-duty customs officer and a friend, according to reports from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
The robbery happened around 10:45 p.m. Monday in the vicinity of the Royal Palms bar and restaurant on West Bay Road. The 23-year-old woman told police she was robbed by a man who appeared to be holding a knife. The woman was on her way home from work when the hold-up occurred.
The customs officer and his friend noticed the woman in distress while driving along West Bay Road and stopped to speak with her. Based on her statement, they spoke to witnesses in the area of the beach where the suspect ran after the robbery.
The two men got back into their car and drove along West Bay Road searching for the suspect, whom they located on Helen Drive, according to police. He was arrested and handed over to police on suspicion of robbery.
The suspect took the woman’s handbag and injured her hand in taking the bag, according to police. The bag contained credit cards and about $300 in cash, mixed between Cayman Islands and U.S. currency, among other items.
