The Garden Club of Cayman’s flower show and plant sale, with the theme “Living in Paradise,” takes place this weekend.
The show will be held at the home of Joyce Dunbar at 495 North West Point Road, West Bay, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Flower enthusiasts, novices and veterans will show off their horticultural design ideas and flower-arranging talents.
Jill Wood, president of the Garden Club, recalls how the club began in 1957.
“It was a small group of dedicated gardeners that included Allan Donald, Dorothy Roulstone, Velda Bodden, Corinne Thompson, Olive Hind, Lily McTaggart, Ena Watler and Queenie Bodden, who met at the Seaview Hotel and founded the Garden Club of Grand Cayman to promote interest in gardening, horticulture and flower arranging,” Ms. Wood said.
Today, the Garden Club follows the same traditions as those early founders by undertaking projects to beautify the community and actively promote the preservation of native plants, she added.
Sales of the plants and flowers go to support local projects.
