The annual Batabano celebrations were marred on Saturday by reports of gunshots in central George Town in the aftermath of the carnival.
As festivities following the colorful parade spilled out across the capital on Saturday evening, police were called to reports of gunfire.
No one was injured in the incident, but police confirmed that shots had been fired and an arrest was made later on Saturday.
Police said in a statement that the 911 center received a call “that a firearm had been discharged in an area that was crowded with people enjoying the Batabano festivity,” at around 7 p.m.
The nature of the incident is still being investigated and it remains unclear whether this was a targeted attack which failed or if the shots were simply fired into the air as part of a reckless celebration.
