Chief medical officer retires after 12 years

The Ministry of Health has appointed a new temporary chief medical officer to serve the Health Services Authority, replacing Dr. Gerald Smith.

Dr. Elizabeth McLaughlin temporarily replaces Dr. Smith, who has retired as chief medical officer. The appointment became effective on March 31.

Dr. Smith had served as chief medical officer for 12 years.

Chief Executive Officer of the Health Services Authority, Lizzette Yearwood said Dr. McLaughlin would remain in the position for six month and the health ministry would subsequently appoint a permanent chief medical officer.

Dr. McLaughlin had been the head of the emergency section at the Health Services Authority.

Although he left his managerial role, Dr. Smith continues to work at the Cayman Islands Hospital as an anesthesiologist.
