Fugitive confirmed murdered in Jamaica

Police have confirmed that a man murdered in Jamaica in March has been positively identified as Caymanian fugitive Anthony Smith.

Mr. Smith, who was wanted in Cayman for drug related offenses, had been on the run since giving police the slip by diving into the ocean after being stopped by officers in West Bay in October last year.

Police believe he escaped the island within days of the incident and was hiding out in Jamaica when he was shot and killed in March.

A spokesman for the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said Mr. Smith’s family had been informed this week of the official confirmation of his death.

“Jamaica Police confirmed that the finger prints supplied by the RCIPS were matched to those of the unidentified male found on March 14, 2014 as Mr. Michael Anthony Smith.”

Mr. Smith is believed to have been killed on March 14 – two days short of his 34th birthday,

He was said to have been shot in the back of the head in the Manchester district of Jamaica, some 60 miles from Kingston.

The body remained unidentified for nearly two months.

Jamaican police contacted their Cayman counterparts in early May after investigations led them to believe it could be Mr. Smith.
