Maples slug past Geeks, KPMG earn rematch with Titans

The Maples Sluggers staved off elimination on the diamond.

Maples defeated the Delphi Geeks, 13-12, in the 2014 Winter Adult Coed Softball League playoffs. Put on by the Cayman Islands Little League Association, double elimination games take place throughout the week at the Field of Dreams.

It was a tense game last Thursday that came down to timely hitting from the likes of Jeremy Miller, Kevin Maxwell and Chris Bennett of Maples overriding heroic plays in the field and at the plate from Delphi talents Johnny Johnson Sr, Terry Ballard and Darrell Paddyfoot.

The Sluggers now go on to face the BritCay Premiums on May 22 in another B League elimination contest. After claiming the ninth seed in the regular season, Maples would upset the sixth seed Al La Kebab Hitmen in its postseason opener, 17-9, before losing to second seed Coors Light Chuggers, 15-5.

BritCay, the third seed, is an experienced team looking to produce postseason success. Richard Bodden and the Premiums did not get out to a good start, losing its playoff opener to the 10th seed Rackam’s Crabbies, 10-6.

In the C League, the fifth seed NCB Crushers won its elimination game against eighth seed HSBC, 15-3. As a result, NCB moves on to the next match on May 20, at 8:15 p.m. on field three.

In the A League, the finals will feature a rematch of last season’s title game as reigning champs KPMG A challenge the Tower Titans on May 22 from 6:30 p.m. on field four. Tower were a perfect 12-0 during the regular season to claim the top seed while KPMG were the second seed. Tower beat KPMG, 15-7, earlier in the playoffs after crushing the A.L. Thompson’s Hammers, 16-3. KPMG booked its finals berth by beating Cayman National Bank twice, by scores of 5-4 and 10-9.

Doug Harrell hopes to celebrate another title over Tower.
