Cayman’s tourism businesses win rave travel reviews

TripAdvisor hands out 156 certificates of excellence

Influential world travel website TripAdvisor handed out more than 150 certificates of excellence to Cayman businesses in 2014 year as the islands’ hotels, restaurants and tour operators pulled in rave reviews from visitors.

To qualify for the award, businesses must maintain an average rating of four stars or higher, based on traveler reviews on the website. Volume and quantity of recent reviews are also taken into account.

The total of 156 awards is one fewer than in 2013 but dwarfs the figure for the previous year, which was just 42. On the list are 65 attractions businesses, 59 cafes and restaurants and 33 hotels or guest houses.

More than 20 dive shops were included on the list – another accolade for the Cayman Island’s scuba diving industry.

Stingray City remains the top attraction in Cayman, according to reviewers on the website. The Caribbean Club is rated as the top hotel, while Bombay Chopsticks in East End is the highest rated restaurant.

Familiar tourist attractions such as Seven Mile Beach, the Kittiwake wreck and beach horse riding are all highly rated by tourists. Also high on the list – rated as the fifth best attraction in the Cayman Islands – is a much lesser known stop on the tourist trail – Davinoff’s Concrete Sculpture Garden.

The little-known North Side attraction, which features sculptures of Cayman’s iconic species including blue iguanas, turtles and large crabs – appears to be an undiscovered gem of the island’s tourism product, pulling in five and four star reviews from all visitors, although with only 28 reviews in total, it does not get a certificate of excellence.

TripAdvisor features more than 100 million reviews by travelers of tourism-based businesses worldwide and has become a valuable source of word of mouth marketing, particularly for small businesses.

Keith Sahm, of Sunset House which was given the award for the third year in succession, said, “There is no greater seal of approval than being recognized by one’s customers. With the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence based on customer reviews, the accolade is a remarkable vote of confidence to our business and our continued commitment to excellence.

“This award is not just for the hotel, but the entire staff of Sunset Divers, SeaHarvest and My Bar, that make the entire experience possible”

“TripAdvisor is pleased to honor exceptional hospitality businesses for consistent excellence,” said Marc Charron, president of TripAdvisor for Business. “The Certificate of Excellence award gives top performing establishments around the world the recognition they deserve, based on feedback from those who matter most – their customers.”
