A thrilling end to the season is in the making for the Pony division of Cayman Little League’s 25th season.
The two best teams are squaring off for the knockout championship on June 7 with Encompass having only lost once this season and that was to their opponents, Greenlight Re.
Last Saturday Encompass overpowered CIBC-FCIB, 9-4, as the bankers continued their good postseason form by posting four runs. The Encompass powerhouse offense featured a spectacular home run by Carmon Kline and consistent great hits from Walker Riley. Their defense also excelled, keeping their opponents scoreless going into the final inning, with Jonathan Bodden being among the stars by contributing multiple outs and almost turning a double play.
The other game was a thriller with the lead changing hands many times but in the end, Greenlight overcame Burger King, 11-8. Strong defense from Greenlight robbed Malachi Ramos of hits. Singles from Johann Taylor, Jackson Mackay and doubles from Aiden Powery and Nicolai Christian helped Burger King to an early 4-0 lead but, despite their defensive efforts, Brodey McComb hit a three-run homer after singles from Kaylee and Andre Espeut. Not to be outdone, Neil McComb hit a three-run homer for a 6-4 lead.
Christian brought home two runs with his next hit and came home himself. Burger King had an 8-6 lead but that was to be the end of their scoring as Brodey McComb propelled Greenlight to victory.
This weekend will see Burger King taking on CIBC-FCIB for third place while Digicel will challenge for KPMG for fifth place. As soon as the action finishes, players will gather under the tents at the Field of Dreams for an awards ceremony.
