Conyers down HSBC, pace All Stars

Conyers, Dill and Pearman have one more chance at glory on the diamond.

Conyers will battle Global Captive Management for the tournament title in the girls softball division of Cayman Little League’s 25th season. The contest was postponed from last Saturday due to inclement weather. To get to the final, Conyers had to beat HSBC Bank Cayman Ltd, 11-2, in the end-of-season tournament’s first game. Daneliz Thomas pitched three strong innings for the victors, allowing just one run, while striking out six HSBC batters. Teammate Maya Smith also pitched well in her inning of work, allowing just one run.

Offensively, Conyers had a big start, scoring six runs in the first and four more in the second. Leadoff batter Kacie Chisholm reached base all three times and scored a run. Thomas scored three runs for Conyers, while Lacee Barnes, Abigail Cunningham and Ashley Rankine added two apiece. Power hitter Emma Conolly belted two home runs to account for the only scores for HSBC.

The division also had an all-star game, which went right down to the wire as a combined team of Conyers/HSBC rallied to defeat the combined squad of GCM/HSBC, 11-10. The GCM/HSBC side had a 5-0 lead after one inning, as Astrid Conolly, Krystal Arch, Tashaunda Hurlston, Beth Johnson and Liz Westin all crossed the plate. The big hits of the inning were Arch’s double down the right field line and a triple by Westin. In the top of the second, Astrid Conolly led off with a single, Arch tripled and Alisha Forbes followed with an RBI single. Forbes later scored to make it 8-0.

The Conyers/HSBC group bounced back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second. Thomas, Zorie McBean, Barnes, Alexis McDonald and Kianda Parchment all scored, with key hits coming from Barnes and Kacie Ramos. Neither team scored in the third, but Emma Conolly of Conyers/HSBC completed a great double play by fielding a hard grounder, stepping on third and firing to first. In the fourth inning, Arch turned a double play of her own, catching a line drive on the mound and zipping the throw to first to double up the eager runner. After those two outs, however, Conyers/HSBC had a furious five run rally.

Rankine, Smith, Ramos, Astrid Conolly and Thomas scored, with the big blow being a line drive home run to left field from the bat of Thomas. In the top of the fifth, Forbes and Johnson scored to tie the game at 10-10. In the bottom of the fifth, with two outs and the game on the line, Ramos lined a sharp single to left, scoring McDonald from second – which gave Conyers/HSBC the exciting 11-10 walk off victory. All of the girls from both teams are to be congratulated for playing an entertaining game.

Due to the rainy weather last Saturday, the family fun day, awards presentations and fundraising raffle have been rescheduled for the public holiday on June 16. The ceremony will celebrate all of the various groups within the league, which is organized by the Cayman Islands Little League Association.
