Police headquarters vacated

The home of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service headquarters in George Town has a temporary new look as a giant yellow and black tent covers Elizabethan Square while fumigation work is carried out.

In an RCIPS statement last week, Chief Inspector Angelique Howell said the landlord had required the building, which houses the police headquarters, the RCIPS’s finance and human resources offices, and the Financial Crime Unit, to be vacated by last Friday.

“Occupants will not be able to return to the building until after proper safety assessments are completed,” Ms. Howell said, adding that personnel would stay at their temporary sites until further notice.

Once the fumigation work is done, some construction work will begin so the offices will remain at their alternate sites in the interim.

Currently, Commissioner David Baines and the deputy commissioners of police are located at the George Town police station; the Financial Crime Unit is at the Government Administration Building; and the finance and human resources offices are in Bodden House.
