Summer camp roundup

It’s that time of year again, with all sorts of organizations putting on special camps for the youngsters. Here are just a few of the summer camps on offer this year: 

Camana Bay Multi-Sport Camp 

  • Age range: 6-14 
  • Dates: July 8-11 and 14-18 
  • Cost: $120 for the 1st week and $150 for the second week 
  • Hours: 8 a.m.-noon (drop off from 7:30am) 
  • Activities: Have fun and develop skills if you’re a young athlete of any level of ability. Sports include basketball, volleyball, tennis, swimming and football, among other activities, to help improve conditioning and enhance overall athletic ability in preferred and new sports. 

Camana Bay Basketball Camp with Orlando Magic 

  • Age range: 7-17 
  • Dates: July 21-25 
  • Cost: $150 
  • Hours: 8:30 a.m.-noon for ages 7-12; 12:30-4 p.m. for ages 12-17 (12-year-old registrants can opt for the morning or afternoon session based on their confidence level and overall skill).  
  • Activities: Train with a special guest from the Orlando Magic with authentic NBA instruction. Skill improvement can come through stations, drills, skills contests and games. 

Horse Camp – Cayman Riding School 

  • Age range: 5 and up 
  • Times: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 
  • Dates: Week 1: July 2-4, Week 2: July 8-11, Week 3: July 14-18, and Week 4: Aug. 25-29  
  • Cost: Please call for details 
  • Activities: British Horse Society instructors present riding lessons and stable management. Riding helmets are provided free. 

Creative Arts Summer Camp  

  • 15 Pasadora Place, Smith Road, George Town 
  • Weeks: June 30-July 4 and July 7-11

  • Times: 1-4 p.m. 
  • Ages: 5 and up 
  • Cost: $225/week 
  • Activities: Music, visual arts, songwriting, plays, games and talent shows. 

Back to School Summer Camp 

  • Age range: 5 and up 
  • Dates: Aug. 18-22 
  • Cost: $275 per week 
  • Times: 1-3:30 p.m. 
  • Activities: Using games and fun activities to practice learning school rules, how to make friends, how to calm down, how to listen and plenty of school skills. 

Bookworms Camp 

  • Age range: 4-6 
  • Dates: July 21-25 
  • Cost: $275 per week (includes a snack) 
  • Hours: 9 a.m.-noon 
  • Activities: Bookworms aims to support children to further develop their looking and listening skills for stories, practice phonological awareness skills and reading aloud, encourage creative thinking, increase vocabulary and descriptive language and practice telling stories through being inspired by favorite books. 

S.E.A. (Science Environment Animals) Camp 

  • Age range: 6 and up 
  • Dates: July 7-11 
  • Cost: $350 per week 
  • Hours: 1-4 p.m. 
  • Activities: Youngsters will learn about their environment through snorkeling, arts, crafts, surveys and treasure hunts – make sure they bring their masks, snorkel and fins. Chatterbox has several other camps as well. Call for details. 

Hopscotch Summer Music Camp 

  • Age range: 12-18 
  • Dates: July 14-18 and Aug. 11-15 
  • Times: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. 
  • Cost: $25 registration with one-week camp for $400. Snacks and lunch included. Registration fees credited toward camp cost on placement. 
  • Activities: Campers will have the opportunity to be a part of a production team in which they will write, record, edit, mix and ultimately produce their own original work. Campers will also work closely with some of Cayman’s talent who have been trained at Berklee College of Music in the U.S. 

YMCA Summer Day Camp “Summer of Dreams”  

  • Age range: 6-12 for day camp; 14-17 for counselors in training (selection process) 
  • Dates: July 14-Aug. 22 
  • Cost: $130 per week ($10 sibling discount) 
  • Times: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 
  • Activities: The YMCA is partnering with Swim and Trim and the Little League Association to offer a safe, values-driven, educational and fun program at the Field of Dreams. Activities will be organized into theme weeks and will include swimming, group games, sports, arts and crafts, cooking, reading, fitness challenges, team-building, songs, skits and occasional field trips for paddle boarding and exploring. The YMCA is also accepting applications for 14-17 year-old leaders to serve as counselors in training. 

Cayman National Cultural Foundation Summer Arts Camp 

  • Age range: 6 to 16, with 6-year-olds enrolled if an older sibling is also enrolled 
  • Dates: Aug. 11-15 
  • Costs: $125 per child 
  • Times: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (early drop-off at 8 a.m.) 
  • Activities: Traditional games and entertainment with a focus on creating handmade toys/games as well as developing performing arts skills such as storytelling and dancing. A lunch break of 55 minutes is scheduled, and the camp fee includes juices, water, sandwiches, fruit, veggies and dip, cheese and crackers, porridge and other light foods. Patties, corn bread and other sponsored items will be provided on special days, and campers can also bring their own snacks  

Triple C Summer Enrichment Camp 

  • Age range: Preschool to 6th grade 
  • Times and dates: June 23-Aug. 1, 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. (plus after care 3:30-5:30 p.m. 
  • Cost: $50 registration; $750 tuition (6 weeks); $150 after care (6 weeks) 
  • Activities: Academic activities include language arts, writing, mathematics; afternoon activities include arts and crafts, computers and outdoor activities. Note: The canteen will be closed and refreshments are not provided, so please arrange with your child. 

Triple C SAT Prep Courses 

  • Age range: SAT students 
  • Times and Dates: June 23-July 17, 8 a.m.-noon 
  • Cost: $500 Triple C Students; $625 non-Triple C Students; $25 textbooks 
  • Activities: College board courses in maths and language arts from Monday to Thursday for students and the community. 

Junior Summer Camp 

  • Dates: July 14-Aug. 15 
  • Cost: $160 for members and $190 for non-members 
  • Details: Tennis, tennis, tennis! 
  • Academic Camp 
  • Age range: 4-7 
  • Times and Dates: July and August, 9 a.m.-noon 
  • Cost: $300 per week 
  • Activities: Reading and mathematics skills are the order of the day for the youngsters on this one. Cayman Learning Centre has several other summer programs; email or call for details. 

Marine Biology, Swim & Snorkel 

  • Age range: Call for information 
  • Times and Dates: June 23-27, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • Cost: $375 – bring a buddy and save $20 
  • Activities: A week of learning about marine biology, swimming and snorkeling. Campers will make their own ocean video with participants as directors, plus excursions including the Turtle Farm and a Rum Point adventure. There’s also a snorkel photo shoot and plenty of other activities. A camp for beginner swimmers through to advanced. 

Fitness Connection Summer Camps 

  • Dates: June 30-Aug. 29 
  • Age range: 4 to 12 (but age 3 considered on direct enquiry) 
  • Cost: $375 per week, includes all activities 
  • Activities: Swimming, water sports and safety; each week themed with everything from pirates to eco, World Cup, Olympics and kitchen skills. 
  • Cost: $375 per week, includes all activities
