Motorcycle driver dead in crash

Update: Royal Cayman Islands Police have arrested an SUV driver in connection with an overnight fatal accident on West Bay Road.

According to a statement from the RCIPS, the 37-year-old driver of the Honda CRV involved in the crash was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and suspicion of drunk driving.

Initial story: A motorcycle driver died overnight following a two vehicle collision at the southern end of West Bay Road.

The accident occurred around midnight near the Captains Bakery. The bike ended up in the southbound lanes of West Bay Road, while the SUV apparently pulled off the road following the crash. 

Police said a 21-year-old male motorcyclist and the driver of a Honda CRV collided at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Police said the motorcycle was traveling from the West
Bay direction towards George Town and the driver of the
CRV was traveling from George Town towards West Bay accompanied by a
38-year-old male passenger.

Police said the accident happened when the driver of the CRV was turning right
into Slate Drive from the West Bay Road and both vehicles collided.

The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital just before 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.  The CRV driver and passenger were not hurt.

Police said they had some information that a bicyclist may also have been involved in the crash and asked the person to come forward and give a statement.  

The crash is Cayman’s first fatal car accident for 2014.
