Haines cash boost

Derek Haines is enjoying contributions to his $1 million Cayman HospiceCare Challenge since running the San Francisco Marathon Sunday.

“An old chum from Cayman met us in San Francisco and took us on a boat tour of the bay, so passing under the bridge instead of running over it,” Haines said. “He also donated $1,000 to the challenge.”

When Haines went to lunch on Wednesday, he bumped into some local businessmen, who wish to remain anonymous, and they pledged $20,000 to the challenge.

This brings the total to about $640,000. For Haines, this was a terrific way to be welcomed back home.

He received a check from CINICO on Thursday and is happy that locals have been really kind with their comments and congratulations on finishing another race.

It was the fourth of six for the year and Haines, 65, finished sixth in his age group and was officially timed at 4 hours, 00 minutes, 42 seconds and in the top 20 percent overall.

“I am happy with the result even though I missed out on breaking four hours,” he said. There was a 6k race at Camana Bay to coincide with Haines running, which raised $690.

In the meantime, he is training for his fifth marathon, in Dublin in October.

“I dare not lose my level of fitness and also my running partner, Cindy Hew, is taking part in the Chicago marathon so I will be training with her.”
